Dec 23
The Sunday before Christmas was always celebrated with Salvation Army carols at the mule yard. All of the firewood would be cut up and bagged ready for delivery to Jamestown. Poppa would chop the wood up even though his eyesight was poor. There were people who did have doubts as to whether it was true that he couldn’t see.
I am certain however that he couldn’t see. I was a very mischeivious child and I would dance and stick my tongue out at Poppa. He could hear very well and if he heard the slightest noise he would call out all four of his grandchildren’s names and when he thought that it was me he would throw a huge log at me. So I learned to jump and move very quickly or pay the consequences.
