I have beautiful memories of my grand mother Dolly.
I think about her quite a lot. She looked after and cared for me from as young as eighteen months old. I didn’t know my mother and to me my grandmother was everything and she protected me from abuse. Although she herself had suffered years of domestic violence and abuse from her husband Fred.
She was always telling me to be quiet not to make a noise. She said this would upset my grandfather and I used to think how can you keep a child quiet? It was a very difficult time for everone although I didn’t know my mother I kept thinking about her.
My grandmother didn’t take me to school on the first day at school. It was my Auntie Mary who walked me as far as her school Hartford. I remember walking the rest of the way with a boy named Mackey Peters and his sister. I was very frightened and I wet myself and I didn’t tell anyone. I was far to frightened to worry about anything I couldn’t wait for the school to end so I could go home to my grandmother and give her a great big hug.
