I am proud that I am from a long line of women who were indeed strong,
women who would toil all day long,
women who would have ten to twelve hungry mouths to feed,
women who would make your heart bleed,
I remembered back then that some children were fathered by different men,
you knew your sister and your brother,
some of us never knew our father,
some children were born into a culture of rape,
For some woman, there was no escape.
Some mothers would work abroad they would pray to the good lord,
lord have mercy on our little mites, back then Women didn’t have any rights
They were good mothers they did their best, they were surppressed
They did what they were told, another baby they would get to hold, back then there wasn’t any birth control
Hardship was huge , abuse was huge, their struggles were huge,
They tried to cope they live in hope,
They would love their children dearly,
on a saturday night they would forget their plight,
They would put on their dancing shoes and their best party frock,
They would dance the night away and didn’t give a fcuk,
my moma would put on her bright red lipstick, her dancing shoes and her party frock she would say “I don’t give a fcuk,”
I also put on my bright red lipstick my stiltlos and my little black frock ,
And just like my muma I don’t give a fcuk
I am proud that I am from a long line Of woman,
who loved their children dearly they faced hardship, pain and isolation there were men that showed no respect and there were women who didn’t give a fcuk. by Dorothy maude.
