It was wonderful to see the St. Helena Athletic group in Glasgow at the Commonwealth Games. I enjoyed it very much, and it was a pleasure for me to watch as well as others. However, it did set off some triggers of my time at Longwood Junior School.
I clearly remember one example where children would be chosen to go on school outings, sometimes to visit a ship that had called to the island. I clearly remember my peers from Longwood School were invited to a Christmas party on a visiting British submarine, and excitement would turn to disappointment as I was never chosen to go.
I had never been chosen once at school. In fact it would always be the same children that would always get a chance. It would be their friends or family that got chosen, and like me, some children would feel worthless.
What a feeling for a child to feel.
What a contrast to todays children, who are rewarded for their hard work and determination and not always given opportunities because of who there parents are.
