My grandmother was born Dorothy Yon. She came from the Half-Tree-Hollow area of St. Helena. She never knew her parents because they died when she was very young and her sister Sara-Yon raised her. She had a brother named Johnny Yon and another brother that had the nickname Jimbo. I am not sure of his real name.
In her later life she married Rupert Clingham and they had three children. Their names were Mitchel, Cyril and Lily. Rupert died when he was 25 leaving her with 3 children. Cyril went to live with his fathers family and Mitchel lived with Sara my grandmothers sister. Lily was brought up by my grandmother and her new husband Frederick Henry, my grandfather. Frederick would beat Lily along with his children. Lily died because of mysterious circumstances, at the young age of 13 years old.
My grandmother never came to terms with Lily’s death and talked about her constantly. Because of this she kept all of her clothes. I would go with my grandmother to put flowers on Lily’s grave at Hallys Mount. My grandmother was always well dressed and wore a hat, she never lost her temper or held any grudges. She would read me Uncle Toms Cabin and Gladys Ailwood. She was a role model everyone loved and the whole island went to her funeral.
Lovely dottie
