I always thought there were much prettier girls names than Dorothy. I was named after my grandmother, she was called Dolly and I was always Dottie. Most people said my name as if it was something unpleasant. The headteacher at my school would say my name out a loud, march me to the front of the class, and hit me with every bit of strength in her adult body. I didn’t think she was doing anything wrong. I had become accustomed to the beatings. I would pretend she was calling me to the front of the class to present me with a prize. I didn’t let anyone see me cry because I kept my tears in my heart. It wasn’t until I had children of my own I realized how cruel these teachers were, they knew that I didn’t have a mother, yet they would hit me most days. I loved it when the Salvation Army captain called my name, they were presenting me with a beautiful book for good attendance at Sunday school. Back at our house, I would read my book by candlelight because we didn’t have electricity in our village. Most of the time the stories were so good I would forget all the abuse and torture dished out to me by my grandfather and headteachers. I would get inside the book and be as happy as the characters I was reading about. Enid Blyton was my favourite author, the famous five and the secret seven were all so special to me. Kitty wells kept me going with her music when I was older. I would play her songs over and over on a battery record player. I loved her music so much I would try to imitate her. I did get an audience and I loved every minute of it. Even at my lowest point, I wanted to make something of myself. My grandmother tried her very best to raise me, teaching me right from wrong, and self-respect. If the opportunities had been there my world would have been so different.
